Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the death on Saturday of a 6-week-old infant, deputies reported. Vanessa Tolbert was pronounced dead at Grossmont District Hospital at 10:26 p.m. An autopsy on Sunday revealed the child died of head injuries. Sheriff’s deputies said the baby’s parents, Steven Tolbert and Connie Sue Melville of Donna Jean Lane in Santee, took the girl to the Santee sheriff’s substation about 9 p.m. Saturday. Paramedics were summoned and took the baby to the hospital.
