State health clinics in 27 counties will begin offering tests this summer to determine if people are at risk in contracting AIDS, state Health Services Director Kenneth W. Kizer has announced. The tests, which frequently produce false positive readings, will show only whether a person may have developed antibodies to a suspected AIDS virus, the fatal immune deficiency disease primarily affecting homosexual males. “It’s not the best test in the world, thought it’s appropriate for blood bank screening,” Kizer said. “The aim is to protect the blood supply.” The tests, part of a $5-million program financed by the state, will be free. They will be administered at testing sites adjacent to health facilities in the participating counties, which include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego.
