A Mexican man who was critically injured in a robbery on Otay Mesa April 1 died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital. Ramon Madina Duarte, 26, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest. He was shot during the robbery of 10 illegal aliens by five unknown assailants, authorities said. According to a police spokesman, the 10 men were in a field south of Otay Mesa Road and east of Cactus Road when they were attacked. The assailants forced the men to lie on the ground and robbed them, the spokesman said. He said they then ordered all the men to leave except Duarte, who they accused of being a guide for illegal aliens entering the United States. After the other nine men had walked about 40 yards away, shots were fired. Returning to the scene, the men found Duarte bleeding from 14 gunshot wounds, the spokesman said. Police are continuing their investigation of the robbery, though no suspects have been arrested, the spokesman said.
