San Diego’s Steve Garvey hit two home runs Friday night, something he doesn’t do all that often, but said the 7-3 victory over Atlanta was more important.

Garvey also had a single, and Kevin McReynolds and Al Bumbry hit two-run doubles as the Padres spoiled the Braves’ home opener before a crowd of 45,389.

“The victory sets a tone,” Garvey said. “It’s never too early to establish yourself, psychologically and physically.

“The home runs were nice. I don’t do it too often, but I’ll remember the win more than the home runs.”

Garvey also said the Padres would not take the season for granted and rest on their 1984 laurels.

“This dispels any question that this team will sit on its heels,” he said.

The Braves, who had won two straight games at Philadelphia to open the season, managed only three hits in seven innings off Andy Hawkins--two by Dale Murphy, who continued his torrid early-season hitting.

Murphy, who has seven hits in his first three games, hit a bases-empty homer in the sixth inning--his second home run of the season--and scored on a single by Chris Chambliss in the fifth after cracking a double.

Garvey homered in the fourth inning off starter and loser Rick Camp and in the eighth off Gene Garber.

The last time Garvey hit two home runs was April 24, 1981, against the Padres while he was a member of the Dodgers.

He hit only eight home runs last season.

N.Y. Mets 1, Cincinnati 0--Gary Carter hit his second game-winning home run of the week, and Bruce Berenyi and Doug Sisk combined on a three-hitter at New York.

The win was the third in as many starts for New York and its third one-run victory.

Cincinnati’s Pete Rose went 2 for 4 to raise his career hit total to 4,102. He needs 90 to break Ty Cobb’s record.

Berenyi (1-0) pitched seven strong innings, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out six. Sisk pitched the final two innings and recorded his first save. Mario Soto (1-1) was the loser.

Carter, who made a successful debut with the Mets Tuesday by hitting a game-winning homer in the 10th inning, led off the fourth by ripping a 2-and-2 pitch from Soto over the wall in left-center field. It was his second homer of the season.

Pittsburgh 6, St. Louis 4--Jason Thompson hit a two-run homer and Doug Frobel added a two-run single in a four-run first inning for the Pirates in their home opener.

The win went to Don Robinson (1-0), who pitched 3 innings in relief of starter Larry McWilliams. John Candelaria, who came on after Robinson gave up a leadoff double in the ninth, finished the game to get his first save.

A crowd of 47,335 turned out for Pittsburgh’s first night opener in the club’s 109-year history. Last season, the Pirates drew only 773,500 fans, a National League low.

Houston 8, Philadelphia 3--Terry Puhl drove in three runs with a triple and a single in a seven-run sixth inning for the Astros at Houston.

Philadelphia starter Jerry Koosman shut out the Astros for five innings, and the Phillies scored three times in the top of the sixth to go ahead, 3-0, before Houston’s big inning.

Montreal 5, Chicago 1--The Expos’ Dan Driessen hit a two-run homer in a four-run fourth inning, and Bryn Smith pitched a three-hitter for eight innings at Chicago.

Rookie Herm Winningham hit his first major league homer for the Expos.

Smith (1-0) struck out three and walked none. The only hits he allowed were a leadoff single by Leon Durham in the second, a leadoff seventh-inning triple by Shawon Dunston, who came around to score, and a bloop single by Ron Cey to lead off the eighth.

Jeff Reardon pitched the ninth for Montreal.
