Nearly 1,000 new cases of salmonella were reported in 24 hours and the number of confirmed cases rose to more than 3,600 in the nation’s largest outbreak of food poisoning, officials said. At least eight deaths have been linked to the salmonella in milk produced by Jewel Companies Inc. since the outbreak began two weeks ago. Investigators say they have done everything but tear out the walls and floors of the dairy, but the cause of the outbreak remains a mystery. Jewel faces 30 pending or threatened lawsuits and possibly the cost of cleaning up milk that employees improperly dumped into sewers.
