Home Runs Help Las Vegas Sweep Doubleheader From UC Irvine

UC Irvine ran into that home-run hitting machine known as Nevada Las Vegas Saturday and dropped a doubleheader to the Rebels, 7-3 and 8-7 in 10 innings, in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action in Anteater Stadium.

In the first game, UNLV (8-8, 27-14) easily handled the Anteaters, 7-3, by hitting four home runs, including two by designated hitter Craig Reese. Reese, a junior, hit two solo homers and was 3 for 4 overall. Reese’s last home run came in the sixth and was followed by another home run by catcher Jim Arnold.

College baseball’s leading home-run hitter this season, Mike Oglesbee, hit his 18th in the seventh for Las Vegas with a runner aboard. Oglesbee had four RBIs in the game, running his season total to 69.

In the second game, Las Vegas built an early 5-1 lead behind the hitting of Matt Williams, who was 2 for 4 with four RBIs in the game. Williams hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give him 15 on the season.

Irvine got back in the game in the fifth inning when it scored three unearned runs.

In the sixth, the Anteaters took the lead, 6-5, with two runs. Ed Clark, who had doubled, scored on a triple by Mike Sugar and Sugar came in moments later on Doug Irvine’s sacrifice fly.

Las Vegas took the lead back in the seventh when Jim Arnold drove in two runs with a single. But Irvine rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh at 7-7 when Clark singled to score Adam Ging, who had led off the inning with a single.

However, Las Vegas won the game when Brian Whitaker (running for Reese who had singled) scored on a single by Joe Barnett in the 10th inning.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

Cal State Northridge 9-10, Chapman 3-3--The Matadors (10-4, 30-13-1) swept a doubleheader from the Panthers (5-12, 15-19) at Hart Park in Orange. In the first game Matador shortstop Gary Williams went 3 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. In the second game another Northridge shortstop, Matt MacArthur, went 2 for 3 and also hit a home run.

In NAIA District 3 action:

Southern California College 4-7, Biola 0-6--The Vanguards swept a doubleheader from Biola at Coast Mesa. In the first game Vanguard pitcher Brian Otten allowed just one hit en route to his seventh win of the season. Otten, who pitched two one-hitters last season, struck out eight and has now struck out 84 batters in 85 innings this season.

In the second game, Vanguard Pat Price hit a eighth-inning grand slam with two outs to lead SCC to victory.
