A Tustin man died early Sunday of injuries suffered Saturday night when his car was struck by a chartered bus in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Steven R. Totton, 27, was pinned inside his car and had to be extricated by Santa Ana paramedics using a hydraulic prying tool, Police Lt. Bob Jordan said.

The bus, with 11 passengers aboard, was traveling south on Grand Avenue when it entered the intersection at Santa Ana Boulevard and struck Totton’s 1974 Ford, Jordan said. The crash caused the bus to careen into a second vehicle, northbound on Grand Avenue, that had stopped at the intersection for the light, Jordan said.

The bus driver told police the light was green and that Totton’s eastbound car suddenly appeared in the intersection, Jordan said.

None of the bus passengers, who were mentally retarded adults, was injured. The other driver hit by the bus also was not hurt, Jordan said.

The bus driver was not cited, Jordan said, adding that the accident is under investigation.
