Rain Delays Final Round in Magnolia

Rain delayed the final round of the $150,000 Magnolia golf tournament for almost two hours Sunday, then darkness kept 14 players from finishing the rain-shortened tournament.

Paul Azinger of LaPlace, La., shot a 66 Sunday--entering the clubhouse with a nine-under-par 131 before the mid-afternoon rains came. Jim Gallagher of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., was caught on the 17th, also at nine-under.

Both Azinger and Gallagher shot first-round 65s.

Gallagher and 13 others will resume play at 8 a.m. today.

Sunday’s delays were the second and third of the 18th annual tournament at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The scheduled 54-hole event was cut short when afternoon rains stopped first-round play Friday.

Among other finishers Sunday, Mike Donald of Hollywood, Fla., held onto third place one stroke behind Azinger and Gallagher at 132.

Bill Glasson of Friant, Calif., was fourth at 133. Tied for fifth at 134 were Bill Bergin of Marietta, Ga.; Fred Funk of College Park, Md.; and Randy Watkins of Jackson, Miss.

Defending champion Lance Ten Broeck of Riviera Beach, Fla., who shot a first-round 74, finished at 143.

The winner of the tournament takes home $27,000.
