Sweden’s Gunde Svan Gets Another Victory

Gunde Svan of Sweden, the world’s leading cross-country skier, won a 30-kilometer race Sunday by one minute and 31 seconds to cap a brilliant weekend in the final major meet of the season.

His winning time was 1 hour 17 minutes and 32 seconds.

The 23-year-old Swede, a double gold medalist in last year’s Winter Olympics and a two-time winner in the Nordic Ski World Championships three months ago, also won Friday’s 15K. He finished the season with 25 victories, tops in the world.

Torgny Mogren was second Sunday as Swedes swept the top four placings. Giachem Guidon of Switzerland was the top foreigner, finishing fifth in 1:20.23.

Alzbeta Havrancikova of Czechoslovakia won the women’s 5K in 15:00, three seconds ahead of Anna-Lena Fritzon of Sweden.
