The 590-foot gasoline tanker Fuji, damaged in an explosion and missing its bow, may be scuttled at sea if inspectors decide that it is unsafe to tow it to shore for repairs, the Coast Guard said Monday.

The Panamanian-registered tanker broke apart last week in what officials called “relatively rough seas,” and the bow sank as the ship was under tow.
