The FDA told 13 companies, including five in California that market so-called CCK weight-loss products, that there is no evidence to support their safety or effectiveness. CCK, or cholecystokinin, is a hormone found in the intestinal tract and the brain that is believed to help suppress the appetite. According to the FDA, pills and capsules containing the substance have been promoted with claims that they decrease hunger and can cause sudden and dramatic weight loss. The companies have 10 days to comply.
