The City Council has scheduled a hearing on the possibility of banning fireworks sales in Lomita after a petition of protest by a homeowners’ group.

The public hearing, set for May 20, will air concerns raised by the Rolling Ranchos Residential Assn., a homeowner group that collected 211 signatures on the petition protesting fireworks sales. The group is asking that the issue be placed on the November ballot. The council itself could pass an ordinance to ban fireworks.

“We have one roof fire in this area every Fourth of July from the fireworks,” said Bob Gorman, a member of the homeowners association. “Fireworks are dangerous. Personal injuries and fires are caused by them, and we think Lomita should not be selling them.”
