Redondo Beach : Council Gives Final OK to ‘Trolley Car’ Shuttle Buses
The City Council gave final the go-ahead this week to a transportation system featuring buses that resemble old-fashioned trolleys. The buses are scheduled to begin running in June under an agreement with an Arizona-based transportation firm.
American Trolley Lines will operate two buses along a route that includes stops at the Riviera Village, the Harbor/Pier area, the Aviation Boulevard shopping district and the South Bay Galleria.
The “trackless trolleys” will operate Tuesday through Sunday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and will be driven by costumed drivers who will clang a brass bell at stops and intersections.
The council voted unanimously to issue David Shumway, American Trolley president, a temporary business license to operate the service. The license expires Dec. 31. The agreement also allows the council to revoke the license with 60 days notice.
Shumway said the Redondo Beach service is part of a major expansion into Southern California by the firm, based in Mesa, Ariz. Shumway has proposed similar services in Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Newport Beach.
