The recent movement in Congress to impose tariffs as a way of alleviating our trade imbalance with Japan should be reconsidered in light of the potential loss of American jobs and the negative impact it would have on consumers. Such ill-considered assaults on free trade will eventually harm products made by American workers in this country and sold abroad.
As a member of the U.S.-Japan Advisory Commission, along with seven other people appointed by President Reagan and seven people appointed by Prime Minister Nakasone, I would urge Congress and the Japanese Diet to strengthen free trade and create new jobs by implementing our recommendations for eliminating trade barriers.
The current trade imbalance could be resolved by as much as 75% if Congress would lift the ban it imposed on exports of Alaskan oil and gas, and unprocessed logs cut on federal land.
