Child Born to Filipina Who Won INS Fight on Deportation
The Filipina wife of a U.S. citizen who was deported in November but readmitted to this country three weeks later when immigration officials bowed to public pressure gave birth to a son Friday at Santa Monica Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Eleanor Parnes, 29, was deported without her husband’s knowledge by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service on Nov. 15. She was readmitted to the United States on Dec. 7 after her husband, Richard, mounted a protest that led to widespread publicity.
The spokeswoman said the mother and 7-pound baby, David Jason, “are doing fine, and Richard is ecstatic.”
In February, Eleanor Parnes received permission to remain permanently in this country.
She had been an illegal alien since 1974, when she quit her job as a housekeeper to the Philippine consul general in Los Angeles.
