Ray Langston, a 50-year-old newspaper distributor, is celebrating his 50th birthday year in an unusual fashion. He’s planning to run in 50 marathons.

Langston, who is 5-7 and 145 pounds, completed his 31st weekly marathon last Monday at Boston, finishing in 3:02:10.

“It’s a challenge,” said Langston. “I always have to have a goal of some kind to look forward to.

“And I’m sure that I’ve got as big an ego as anybody else.”

Langston has been involved in road racing for only eight years. During his first six years, Langston ran 32 marathons.

“Everybody thought I was crazy to run so many,” he said. “But I enjoyed the competition, and I was usually a little better than anyone else in my age group.”

Last summer, he ran five marathons in 10 weeks “and I breezed through them.”

He’s now 31 down with 19 to go in his current string.
