Acetylene gas exploded inside the Mann Junior High School metal shop Monday afternoon and sent five students and a teacher to the hospital with dizziness, ringing in their ears and headaches, the San Diego Fire Department said.

No one was seriously injured, and all six were quickly treated and released from Villaview Community Hospital, a hospital spokesman said. There was no fire after the explosion of the gas, which is used for welding, but the blast did blow out five windows. There was no damage to any of the shop’s equipment, according to Principal Maruta Gardner. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by Fire Department officials.
