Former Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr., who spent 20 years in the Senate and played a key role in the Watergate hearings, was in critical condition today at a hospital where he was undergoing kidney dialysis, officials said.

Ervin, 88, is suffering from acute renal failure and has “unstable vital signs,” said Roger Rollman, a spokesman for Bowman Gray Medical Center at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
