65% of Lawyers in Poll Support Bird
California Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird received the support of 65% of the 2,521 members of the San Francisco Bar Assn. who responded to a poll on whether she should be reconfirmed next year.
In the poll, the first such survey by a county bar association, Bird fared worse than any of the other four justices whose names will be on the 1986 ballot. Justice Cruz Reynoso got the support of 74% of those polled, Joseph Grodin received 82%, Stanley Mosk, 89%, and Malcolm Lucas, 92%.
Based on the vote, the bar association’s board will meet to decide whether to raise money on Bird’s behalf, and on behalf of others who are facing campaigns to unseat them, said Jerome B. Falk Jr., president of the association.
