Former North Vietnam Official Dies

TOKYO — Nguyen Duy Trinh, a deputy premier and foreign minister in the North Vietnamese government throughout the Vietnam War, died Saturday in Hanoi, Radio Hanoi reported. He was 75.

The Radio Hanoi broadcast, monitored in Tokyo Sunday, said Trinh had suffered a heart attack.

Trinh, who was one of the leaders of his country’s delegation to the Paris peace talks in 1975, was a founder of the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930 and became deputy premier in what was then North Vietnam in 1960. He took over the post of foreign minister in 1963 as the United States was making major increases in its military support of South Vietnam.

Trinh retained both posts after the Communists defeated the South Vietnamese government in April, 1975, but later was removed from office in the same leadership shuffle that eventually ousted Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap.
