President Reagan was urged by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to abandon his controversial plan to visit a cemetery in Bitburg, West Germany, where more than two dozen of Hitler’s SS troops are buried. The board voted 4 to 1 to “respectfully request” that Reagan change his plan and visit some other location, such as a cemetery where U.S. troops who fought in World War II are buried. Supervisor Kenneth Hahn authored the motion, saying that Reagan’s planned cemetery visit is “an affront to millions of Americans ... whose friends and relatives died during the Nazi holocaust. . . .” Supervisor Pete Schabarum voted against the Hahn motion, saying that the county has no business injecting itself into foreign affairs.
