Dorothy Pratt of South Gate has been chosen to represent the eastern section of the 29th Congressional District at the Congressional Senior Citizen Intern Program in Washington in May.

Pratt, who was chosen from 14 applicants, will attend seminars and briefings in the capital and report to senior citizens’ clubs in Huntington Park, Downey and South Gate on her return.

The intern program was founded in 1973 to help senior citizens learn how the government operates in areas affecting their age group, said Joyce Saylor, a community activities coordinator for the 29th District, which is represented by Rep. Augustus Hawkins (D-Los Angeles).

Billye Lightner-Hernandez has been named executive director of the National Council on Alcoholism-Long Beach Area. She has served as an alcohol education teacher and counselor with the High Gain Drinking Program and been associated with the Long Beach Bar Assn.

Rev. Edward M. Robinson, senior minister of Hillcrest Congregational Church for 10 years, conducted his final sermon at the La Habra Heights church on Sunday. Robinson is being joined by his wife, Barbara, and children, Sarah and Jonathan, in accepting a position as senior minister of the Central Union United Church of Christ in Honolulu.

Jason Ray and Coby Ufferheide of Lakewood and Steven Fruhwirth and James Zandi of Long Beach, all of Boy Scouts of America Troop 65, have each been presented with an Outstanding Youth Award by the R.G. Canning Corporations. The national award is presented throughout the country to youths in various organizations who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and personal accomplishments.

Biola University has honored seven employees for 20 years of service: Shirley Allen, Reinhard Buss, Virginia Doland, Colin McDougall, George Nishida, Diane Shanebeck and Jennie Wong. Also honored were board of trustees members Clifton Hanna and Robert Welch, both for 25 years of service, and Edgar R. Lehman, president, and Vincent Morris, vice president for student affairs, both for 20 years of service.

Samanda (Sam) Guyan has been named a Whittier Citizen of the Month for her involvement in various local agencies, including the Whittier Social Services Commission, the Whittier Area Coordinating Council, the Whittier Historical Society and the League of Women Voters. The award program is sponsored by the Human Services Department and McDonald’s restaurant.

Kevin C. Pruitt, 22, of Whittier, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 942, is one of the youngest men ever to earn the Wood Badge beads and scarf, signifying completion of a training course for Boy Scout leaders. At the weeklong outdoor session, trainees learn leadership and management skills and put them to practical use.

Elain A. Wrenn, a senior at Millikan High School in Long Beach, has been chosen from more than 25,000 high school students throughout the United States as one of 500 finalists for a Jostens Foundation Scholarship. Selection of the finalists and 200 scholarship winners is based on outstanding achievements in school and community affairs, work experience and academic excellence. Wrenn is the daughter of Robert and Patricia Wrenn.

Peggy Von Bartheld, a fashion design student at Long Beach City College, won $600 in a fashion design contest sponsored by the Los Angeles County Office of Education and California’s 70 community college districts.

James P. Duchscherer has been named vice president and general manager of the new Whittier Hilton. The 206-room hotel is scheduled to open late this year.
