A proposed $168.3-million Los Angeles Fire Department budget for the next fiscal year, representing a 5% increase over the current budget, was approved by the city Fire Commission and sent to the City Council. The proposal calls for 67 new employees, including 7 firefighters and 48 civilian ambulance personnel. Also included in the request is a new helicopter, 7 new fire engines, a ladder truck and 11 ambulances. Also specified are $1 million for a computerized personnel system and $300,000 for a study of how best to deploy medical and firefighting equipment.
