A 20-year-old Torrance woman, Janet St. Clair, was in stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after being wounded in the legs and hips during a shoot-out with deputies at a Carson telephone booth, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported. Officers said St. Clair was calling her employer to tell him she intended to shoot herself. Four deputies, alerted by the employer, arrived at Torrance Boulevard and Normandie Avenue where she allegedly pointed a gun at Deputy Cornelius Healy, 26. He fired once, hitting her. The officers said they tried to talk her into dropping her weapon, but she began firing. All four deputies returned fire. She was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer.
