BLAKE TO STAR IN NBC SERIES

When NBC’s programming department held a luncheon last week to celebrate the network having climbed out of the ratings cellar this season for the first time in 10 years, there was a surprise benediction from Robert Blake, dressed in the priest’s garb he wore in the TV movie “Hell Town.”

Blake must have put in a special word for himself, because NBC has decided to turn his movie into a series for the TV season that begins in September.

Blake, who won an Emmy Award as the star of “Baretta” during its run on ABC from 1975 to 1978, will portray an ex-con who has become a priest and now fights to keep his East Los Angeles parish free of crime.

An NBC spokesman said it was not immediately decided whether “Hell Town” will be on the new fall lineup that the network plans to unveil Thursday or whether it will be held back as a midseason replacement.
