A Depressing Day’s Reading

Share

Your editorial stated that you want President Reagan to “Just give it to us straight, Mr. President.” As if that’s what the American people want to hear.

Walter Mondale gave it to the American people straight. He told us about sacrifice, fair taxation, reducing the deficit, helping the poor and minorities, and working for the future of America. Did the American people listen? Did they care? Hell, no!

The average selfish, greedy and complacent American doesn’t want to hear the truth. They don’t want to hear about sacrifice, the budget deficit, or the problems of the poor and minorities.

All they want to be told is that everything’s great, all that needs to be done is a few minor adjustments to the economy and the deficit will disappear, that the poor and minorities will be better off without federal assistance, how much their tax cut will be and that prosperity is just around the corner.

And that is exactly what President Reagan will continue to tell them.
