DRAFT CAPSULES
Ram, Raider and Los Angeles area draftees in the first three rounds of Tuesday’s NFL draft, along with height, weight, 40-yard sprint times and random comments from commercial scouting reports:
First Round RAMS
Jerry Gray, DB, Texas. 5-11 1/2, 185, 4.4. “Near the top of pro scouting lists since his sophomore season. . . . Although a free safety in college, should be able to play cornerback in the pros. . . . Covers a tremendous amount of ground. . . . Will hit, at times. Inconsistent tackler. May have read too many of his press clippings. Did some things that make you question his toughness at the end of his senior year. . . . Similar to Ram safety Johnnie Johnson but may be faster and better suited for cornerback.”
RAIDERS
Jessie Hester, WR, Florida State. 5-11, 175, 4.45. “Has dazzling quickness. Scouts wish he would show more toughness. . . . Fine deep acceleration, adjusts to ball well, outstanding jumping ability. . . . Will drop a few balls, although concentration has improved.”
USC
Duane Bickett, LB, to Indianapolis. 6-4 3/4, 232, 4.8. “Can play inside or outside. . . . Has a feel for pass coverage. . . . Lacks speed, isn’t a great athlete (but) plays faster than his speed, so smart and instinctive that he picks up a step or two.”
Ken Ruettgers, OT, to Green Bay. 6-5, 270, 5.1. “Smart, very competitive, productive pass protector. . . . Has had numerous major injuries. . . . Lacks true pulling speed.”
Second Round RAMS
Chuck Scott, WR, Vanderbilt. 6-1, 203, 4.57. “Has been caught in the shadow of the Brown-Toon-Rice troika. . . . Has fine hands and is fearless across the middle. . . . Very smart and productive, excellent competitor, reads coverages and adjusts routes accordingly. . . . Physical blocker. . . . Lacks great speed, drops a few passes.”
CAL STATE FULLERTON
Daren Gilbert, OT, to Philadelphia. 6-5, 270, 5.0. “Light on his feet, moves around like a smaller man. . . . Still raw. Needs more strength and experience.”
Third Round RAMS
Dale Hatcher, P, Clemson. 6-1, 210. “Gets tremendous hang time, rarely has a punt returned. . . . A little inconsistent, hasn’t mastered the art of hitting the coffin corner. . . . Takes three steps instead of the preferred two.”
RAIDERS
Stefon Adams, WR, East Carolina. 5-9 1/2, 190, 4.5. “Can run, catch, return kicks, block and tackle. . . . Rather short, isn’t very fluid.”
Tim Moffett, WR, Mississippi. 6-1 1/2, 181, 4.5. “Fluid, very good hands, adjusts to the ball nicely, will catch over the middle. . . . Can get deep, returns punts. . . . Lacks great quickness into and out of his cuts, may have some trouble getting open.”
CAL STATE LONG BEACH
John Hendy, CB, to San Diego. 5-11, 195, 4.55. “Combines the quickness of a cover man with the pop of a strong safety. . . . Smart, competitive and a team leader. . . . Doesn’t have quite the athletic ability, speed or closing quickness you look for in a cornerback.”
USC
Jack Del Rio, LB, to New Orleans. 6-3, 235, 4.8. “Former All-American who hurt himself (for draft) running dreadful 40 times in combined workouts. Forget all that. The guy can play. . . . Plays hurt. . . . Big, mean and nasty. . . . Agile for his size. . . . Isn’t very quick or fast, didn’t make many big plays in ’84.”
