A UC San Diego student who pleaded guilty Wednesday to malicious mischief in the spray-painting of hundreds of paisley designs all over campus may be required to pay for the estimated $8,000 clean-up costs.

Lee Morrison, attorney for Lee Ann Okada, 22, of University City, said the county will determine the cost of the vandalism before the sentencing on May 31.

According to court records, San Diego Municipal Court Judge E. Mac Amos agreed not to impose any jail time upon Okada.

The 300 paisley designs appeared on sidewalks, doors, walls, trees and steps on the campus in March. The student newspaper received an anonymous letter from the “Underground Paisley Army” that said the vandalism was done to “denounce the cold blankness of cement.”

Morrison said there were others involved with his client in the prank but she was the only one who was charged.

Okada wrote on a court document to the judge that she was guilty of painting “graffiti on walls of a public building.” She remains free on her own recognizance.
