Kurdish guerrillas shot and killed five soldiers who surrounded their mountain cave in the eastern province of Bitlis, local officials reported Wednesday.

Three guerrillas were wounded and captured in the shootout Tuesday, the officials said.

Kurdish guerrillas and security forces have been fighting a small war in southeastern Turkey since August, and about 80 people have been reported killed. Most of the guerrillas belong to the outlawed Kurdish Labor Party, which seeks independence for the area.

Turkey’s population of 50 million includes about 7 million Kurds.
