BROKEN GLASS

Philip Glass is one of America’s most celebrated contemporary composers. His sold-out performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on April 23 may have been a major cultural event for Los Angeles. We expected The Times’ review to be a scholarly, critical analysis to enhance our musicological perspective on this “New Music.”

Instead, in “A Shattering Night With Philip Glass” (April 25), Martin Bernheimer gave us 17 flippant column-inches telling us what a terrible evening he had, since as a critic he could not understand the music technically and as a fan he could not relate to it emotionally.

Please send someone more adventurous to review the L.A. Philharmonic’s West Coast premiere of Steve Reich’s “Desert Music” May 25. This important and popular new genre of music deserves as much respect as The Times gives to Madonna.
