Los Angeles County should act quickly to increase its garbage disposal capacity or face a pileup in 10 years, according to the California Waste Management Board. The assessment said the county now generates 14 million tons of garbage a year, and has only 150 million tons of landfill capacity left. And that is an optimistic analysis, the board said, adding: “Realistically, transportation costs, permit restrictions, public opposition and other factors will complicate the situation, shortening the useful life of remaining landfills even more.”
