U.S. Says Departure of Cuban Advisers Was Normal Rotation
The televised departure from Nicaragua of 100 Cuban military advisers on Thursday was part of a routine rotation of forces and was not a move by Managua to lessen tensions in Central American, Administration officials said Saturday.
The officials said that within hours of the Cubans’ departure, another aircraft brought in at least 60 other Cubans. They said these were replacements for advisers whose term of Nicaraguan duty had ended.
The Sandinista government had said in February that it would send home 100 Cuban advisers to ease international strains in Central America.
