Tamil separatists attacked Sri Lanka’s main northern naval base and an army post. Authorities reported at least 28 rebels and three sailors killed in the fighting. The guerrillas struck the Karainagar naval base with mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades. Security forces responded with fire from helicopter gunships and artillery, as well as from small arms. Rebels also attacked the army camp at Gurunagar. Militant Tamils want a separate state for its minority population in northern Sri Lanka.
