Six hikers aged 6 to 22 set out today to walk across the most arid part of Australia without food or water--to prove God exists.

The group is carrying Bibles, adhesive bandages, cigarette lighters and a Swiss army knife, but no provisions.

The 1,054-mile long trek though the Nullarbor Plain of south Australia was planned to emulate the disciples of Jesus Christ in their mission to spread Christ’s word.

“We believe that God will use our walk as a powerful testimony on his behalf,” 22-year-old Malcolm Wrest said.

The group will rely on berries from trees and the hospitality of people they meet, he said.

Wrest said he did not know how long the walk will take.

“We’re not exactly sure how God is going to do it, we are just sure he will do it,” he said.
