O’Neill View : Reagan Trip Called Failure
House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr. said today that he thinks President Reagan is having an unsuccessful trip in Europe because U.S. allies are rejecting his policies on Nicaragua.
“I certainly don’t think, when he is discussing Nicaragua with every ally across Europe and everybody is in disagreement with him, it has been successful,” O’Neill (D-Mass.) told reporters.
Reagan wants Congress to approve U.S. aid for the rebels fighting the leftist Sandinista government in Nicaragua, a policy O’Neill strongly opposes.
“He couldn’t get a definite date for trade negotiations,” O’Neill added, in a reference to the U.S. failure to achieve agreement on that issue at the Bonn economic summit.
