The Wiseburn Elementary School District is seeking a replacement for Trustee Thomas A. Bigelow, who resigned effective May 28 after 17 years on the school board. Bigelow, a retired Hawthorne police lieutenant, said he plans to move out of the district.

Supt. Arthur Margolese said applications for Bigelow’s post have been mailed to about 3,500 households in the 1,200-student district, which includes Hawthorne and nearby unincorporated county territory. Papers must be returned to the district’s office by 4 p.m. Friday and the board will conduct public interviews of the applicants next week.

The board decided to appoint Bigelow’s successor to avoid the $6,000 to $10,000 cost of a special election and to ensure a quorum when the trustees take up budgetary and other matters, Margolese said.

The new trustee will face election in November. Wiseburn board members serve without pay.
