Unseeded Duncan Upsets No. 5 Kriek, 6-3, 6-3

Lawson Duncan, a U.S. Junior Davis Cup member in 1983, upset fifth-seeded Johan Kriek, 6-3, 6-3, Wednesday in the second round of the $617,000 Tournament of Champions at Forest Hills, N.Y.

“I wasn’t really nervous out there,” Duncan said. “I’ve been waiting a long time to play these clay court tournaments.”

Duncan reached the finals in his last two tournaments, losing to Panatta at Bari, Italy, and Horacio de la Pena at Marbella, Spain.

John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl moved easily into the third round. McEnroe, the two-time defending champion, routed Jaro Navratil of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-3, after Lendl disposed of Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-2, 6-2.

Italy’s Claudio Panatta pulled off a minor surprise when he upended 16th-seeded Horacio de la Pena of Argentina, 7-6, 6-4. Argentina’s Guillermo Rivas ousted No. 10 Tim Wilkison, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, and Australia’s Peter Doohan stopped No. 15 Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland 6-3, 7-5.

Yannick Noah of France defeated Marian Vajda of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-1, in 49 minutes, the quickest singles match of the day.

Third-seeded Aaron Krickstein breezed past Argentina’s Roberto Saad, 6-1, 6-2, in 59 minutes; Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden routed Givaldo Barbosa of Spain, 6-1, 6-2; Victor Pecci of Paraguay ousted Fernando Luna, 6-3, 6-2, and Martin Jaite of Argentina defeated Gabriel Urpi of Spain, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

In other matches, seventh-seeded Brad Gilbert rallied to beat Marc Flur, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; No. 14 Marty Davis downed Bud Schultz, 6-3, 6-2; ninth-seeded Terry Moor stopped qualifier Jim Gurfein, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, and No. 8 David Pate eliminated Dacio Campos of Brazil, 6-3, 6-4.

Hans-Peter Kandler of Austria was injured in a doubles match when he ran into the center line judge’s chair and cut his lower left leg to the bone.

After treatment by the tournament doctor, Kandler was taken to the hospital where he received stitches in the five-inch cut.

Top-seeded Pam Shriver, coming back from a three-month layoff, struggled to a 7-5, 6-3 second-round victory over Barbara Gerken in the $200,000 Australian Women’s Indoor at Sydney, Australia.

Shriver raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, but Gerken broke serve twice before Shriver broke back in the 12th game to wrap up the set. Gerken broke serve in the opening game of the second set, but Shriver got her game back together.

In other matches, third-seeded Barbara Potter cruised past Britain’s Sara Gomer, 6-2, 6-0, fifth-seeded Gigi Fernandez of Puerto Rico overcame Amanda Dingwall of Australia, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Dianne Balestrat downed 17-year-old Janine Thompson of Australia, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Unseeded Ginger Helgeson of Edina, Minn., upset fourth-seeded Halle Cioffi of Knoxville, Tenn., 6-4, 6-4, at Mission Viejo in a second-round match in the 18-and-under division at the 10th annual Seventeen Magazine Tournament of Champions.

Tami Whitlinger of Neenah, Wis., the No. 2 seed in the 18-and-under division, withdrew from the tournament because of illness.
