Brea : Council Approves Bond for Street, Gutter Work

Streets in the downtown area will be resurfaced this summer, following City Council approval of an $11.4-million bond for improvements and repairs.

While approving the bond issue during a study session last week, City Council members discussed another bond issue to pay for a parking structure at a 10-story hotel proposed for a site next to the Civic Cultural Center.

The $11.4-million bond will be used to finance the repavement of old streets and reconstruction of curbs and gutters. Most of the streets are east and west of Brea Boulevard and south of Imperial Highway, public information officer Bonnie Dwyer said.

Another phase of the project to improve streets, sewers and water lines, calls for $10,000 for storm drains and $1.2 million for street lights.

Council members did not decide the amount of another bond they considered for the parking garage for the hotel, approved by the council in January. The hotel, to be built on two acres of the Brea Mall parking lot, is expected to cost between $13 and $15 million and will have 200 rooms and a restaurant.

If the Redevelopment Agency issues a bond, the money would be used to replace the parking spaces taken up by the hotel, as well as to create parking spaces for the hotel itself, Dwyer said. The bond also would finance an additional off-ramp from the Orange Freeway onto Lambert Road, Dwyer said.
