Thousands of angry and dejected illegal immigrants milled about the Nigerian border town of Seme, 24 hours after the expiration of the Nigerian government’s deadline for them to leave the country. Authorities said less than one-fourth of Nigeria’s estimated 700,000 had left by Friday. On April 16, the government ordered the illegal aliens to have their presence approved by May 10 or leave. They were seen as depriving Nigerians of jobs and causing high crime rates in the cities.
