The Eastern-Columbia Building at 849 S. Broadway has been recommended for historic-cultural monument status by the city Cultural Heritage Commission.

Designed by Claude Beelman and built just after the stock market crash of 1929, the building has a tower rising 264 feet above the street with a four-faced clock that still chimes every quarter-hour. The name “Eastern” is written in bright neon on each face of the clock.
