Cal State Fullerton Sweeps UCLA to Capture Softball Championship

Cal State Fullerton, the top-ranked college softball team in the country, swept a doubleheader from fourth-ranked UCLA to earn its fifth straight Western Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship Saturday at Fullerton.

The Titans (49-8, 12-0) clinched the title with a 2-1 victory in the opener, and a 1-0 decision in the second game.

The first game remained tied, 1-1, until Titan Robin Goodin led off the seventh inning with a single, advanced on Susan LeFebvre’s sacrifice and Diane Dodd’s single, and then scored on Leslie King’s fielder’s choice.

Debbie Mygind (25-3) was the winning pitcher, and Tracy Compton (16-4) was the loser.

In the second game, the Titans ruined a potential perfect game by UCLA pitcher Debbie Doom (17-3) when Goodin hit an infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Goodin moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the game’s lone run when Lisa Baker doubled down the right-field line.

LeFebvre (21-5) threw a one-hitter, only allowing a single in the fifth inning to Janet Pinneau. Doom was the loser although she struck out 14.

UCLA (34-7, 9-3) finishes the regular season in second place in the conference. The Titans will host a regional playoff series Thursday and Friday. The winner of the best-of-three playoffs will advance to the College World Series at Omaha.
