Of the 11,000 cases of AIDS reported since the disease was first identified in 1981, the United States has had 9,000 of them, the World Health Organization reported. It said that 40% to 50% of those afflicted by AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) have died. However, the report said that the rate “would probably exceed 90% for patients who have had AIDS for a period of two or three years.” There is no known cure.
