Dorothy Krabsbach, 55, of Norwalk has been named Los Angeles County’s Volunteer of the Year for her contributions to the MacLaren Children’s Center School. She was honored at a ceremony at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center.

Krabsbach has been a volunteer at the MacLaren Hall juvenile facility since November, 1983. According to county Supervisor Pete Schabarum, she developed a library and learning center at MacLaren “from scratch,” supplying the disadvantaged children there with books, story records and educational games, individual tutoring and puppet shows.

Krabsbach, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in library science at Cal State Long Beach, works about 24 hours a week at MacLaren Hall.

David W. Granger, 34, has resigned as director of public affairs for the Port of Long Beach to establish a marketing and public relations firm in Long Beach.

John W. Gregory of Long Beach, retired captain of the Queen Mary, was honored as Senior of the Year by the Long Beach City College Senior Center at a recent luncheon. Gregory was recognized for his contributions in the fields of health, preservation of Indian culture and paraplegic rehabilitation.

Merwyn Smith, coordinator of special projects in the Bellflower Unified School District, has been named principal of its Adult School program. He will begin his new job July 1.

Don Murphy, 84, of Long Beach has received a doctorate in natural hygiene from the College of Life Science in Dallas. Murphy, who has lived in Long Beach since 1923, practiced dentistry there for 52 years before retiring.

James David Ray and John Woelk, students at Somerset Continuation High School in Bellflower, have received scholarships of $500 each from the Los Angeles Times. Ray has developed expertise with computers and Woelk has distinguished himself in the field of art.

Seven area Girl Scouts have received the 1985 Girl Scout Silver Award from the Greater Long Beach Girl Scout Council. The recipients, who completed extensive eligibility requirements, are Tania Dutko, Traci Teal, Kathi McGorman and Amber McKinney, all of Cerritos; Cynthia Grinstead and Heather Rosenbaum, both of Long Beach, and Melissa Meyers of Lakewood.
