A nationwide manhunt was under way for two killers, including the slayer of noted Washington cardiologist Michael Halberstam, who escaped from prison by breaking a hole in a wall and lowering themselves six floors with an electric cord, authorities announced in Chicago. They were identified as informants who had provided details about prison escapes. Being sought were Bernard C. Welch, 45, convicted of the 1980 slaying of Halberstam, and Hugh Colomb, 31, of Rutland, Vt., who was serving a 43-year term for voluntary manslaughter.
