British rail unions called off a strike Monday on the London Underground, after most employees on the subway system ignored picket lines and reported for work.

The 11-hour strike, to protest the introduction of driver-only trains on the four-mile East London line, was ordered in defiance of a ban by the High Court. Trains on that line previously carried both a driver and a conductor.
