Proposed Prison Site in L.A.

Share

I applaud and support Assemblywoman Gloria Molina’s (D-Los Angeles) opposition (Letters, April 30) to the proposed building of a state prison at the Crown Coach Corp. location in Los Angeles’ Eastside, which your newspaper apparently supports in your editorial (May 1), “A Prison in the Neighborhood?”

Your editorial fails to mention at least two important facts. The state Department of Corrections apparently failed to give adequate prior notice to the area’s local political leaders of its intent and high priority being given to the purchase of the Crown acreage. (Public hearings and the seeking of community input appear to have also been kept to a minimum).

In addition, your editorial did not stipulate in what direction to the eight-acre Crown site would the additional 30 more needed acres extend. Could it be that this would bring the prison even closer to the nearby residential area than the one mile you have indicated?

The days are passed when the Eastside stands idly by while projects having a potential adverse effect on its population are left to the discretion of others.
