Division II Track : Motti Again Wins the Decathlon

French Olympian William Motti of Mount St. Mary’s College in Maryland broke his own meet record Tuesday in winning the decathlon for the second straight year at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships.

Motti, who finished fifth in the Olympic decathlon last summer, compiled 8,090 points in the competition held at Cal State Northridge, surpassing his 1984 total of 7,985 points.

Motti finished 381 points ahead of teammate Robert Ekpete, who totaled 7,709. Mike Ledsome of Abilene Christian finished third with 7,473 points.

Knut Gundersen of Mount St. Mary’s finished fourth with 7,424 points, and Northridge’s Dion Giuliano was fifth with 7,229.

Motti, who won three events and finished second in the other two Monday, finished first among the 11 competitors in the discus, with a throw of 155-6, and the javelin, with a toss of 206-1.

Natalie Day of Cal State Sacramento won the heptathlon with a two-day total of 5,422 points, finishing 183 points ahead of Stacy Atkinson of Abilene Christian University, who wound up with 5,239 points.
