The City Council has approved three separate leases for water rights that will give the city 140 acre-feet of water this year for $10,150. The leases are with the County Sanitation District of Los Angeles (110 acre-feet for $8,250), Sparkletts Drinking Water Corp. (10 acre-feet for $700) and Samuel R. Fujimoto (20 acre-feet for $1,200). In addition, Sparkletts will lease the city 60 acre-feet for $4,200 next year.

For several years, Torrance has diversified its sources of water and has several agreements to lease about 1,200 acre-feet of ground water pumping rights.

One acre-foot of water is about 325,900 gallons, or a year’s supply for a family of four.

The city buys 75% of its water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the main source for most cities.
