Rep. Mervyn M. Dymally (D-Compton) has appointed his aide, James S. Fukumoto, staff director of the House Subcommittee on Postal Personnel and Modernization.

Fukumoto, who grew up in Long Beach and was graduated from Poly High School there, is on leave from his position as a senior executive with the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Before becoming an aide to Dymally, Fukumoto was director of policy and special projects for the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Martha Nora, 18, a senior at Paramount High School, has been awarded a $2,000 college scholarship by the Southern California Gas Co. The four-year scholarship includes an offer of employment at the gas company for four summers during her college career. She plans to major in home economics and early childhood education at Cerritos College and Cal State Long Beach.

Wayne Sheley has been appointed dean of the School of Fine Arts at Cal State Long Beach. He comes to the university from West Virginia University, where he was dean of the College of Creative Arts and a special assistant to the president of academic planning.

Mayor Alberto Natividad of Pico Rivera has been installed as a delegate to the Executive Committee of the Southern California Assn. of Governments.

Jessie Reineman has been named Woman of the Year by the Downey Chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn.

Jon’A F. Meyer, a student at Paramount High School, is one of the first recipients of a $1,000 President’s Scholarship from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Gerald S. Adams, associate professor of chemistry at Whittier College, has been named associate academic dean. Beginning July 1, he will be responsible for student advisement, the learning assistance program and academic review.

Greg Fosmire, a senior at La Mirada High School, won two first-place trophies at the Fullerton College High School Theater Festival.

Manuel Figueroa, a Huntington Park High School graduate attending Cal State Northridge, has received $1,000 of a $2,000 scholarship from the Personnel and Industrial Relations Assn. of Southern California. He is to receive another $1,000 after completion of his second semester at the university.

J. Lindsay Woodard of Whittier has been appointed to a three-year term on the Los Angeles County Commission for Women.

Dorothy Hurlbut, a teacher at Fremont Elementary School in the Montebello Unified School District, has been named Teacher of the Year by the Montebello Rotary Club.

Louise Hastings of Bellflower has received the first Cerritos College Foundation Falcon Award in recognition of her support and contributions to the college. Other citizens honored by the college were Lorraine Zuniga of Artesia, Jane Bristol of Bellflower, Arthur Smith of Cerritos, Dr. Manuel Gallegos of Downey, Kirk Real of Lakewood, Dorothy Allen Smith of La Mirada and Dr. Herbert Ott of Norwalk.

Mark Mantel, a composer of contemporary music who was graduated from Cal State Long Beach and teaches there, has received the first Carmen Dragon Memorial Music Scholarship. The $2,000 award honors an outstanding music student in the California State University system.
