The question of whether the Catholic diocese of San Diego can build a multi-purpose center over ruins at Mission San Diego de Alcala will go unanswered for at least another month. Wednesday, the city’s Historical Site Board continued the diocese’s request to its June 26 meeting to give the city attorney’s office time to issue an opinion on the matter.

The diocese, represented by attorney Don Worley, had asked the board to reconsider its ruling of April 24, which called for a complete environmental impact review on the diocese’s revised construction project.

The board’s refusal to act did not sit well with either the diocese or the Committee for the Preservation of Mission San Diego de Alcala, committee member Joy Higginbotham said.

“It didn’t make either side very happy,” Higginbotham said. “The church didn’t like it. Mr. Worley wanted the board to reconsider its decision (Wednesday). I’m a little disappointed because I thought their decision was sound.”
